The Caring Hands 4 HD website is now LIVE! You can read about the organizations mission by clicking here. The organizations mission is to help alleviate the financial burden associated with Huntington's Disease. Huntington's Disease is a devastating, hereditary, degenerative brain disorder for which there is, at present, no cure and only one FDA-approved treatment
(Xenazine) for a symptom of HD. HD slowly diminishes the affected individuals ability to walk, talk and reason. Eventually, the person with HD becomes totally dependent upon others for his or her care. Huntington's Disease profoundly affects the lives of entire families -- emotionally, socially and economically.

Help us help others by participating in Team Wolack's walk for Huntington's October 8th.
According to mobile analytics firm Localytics., the mafority of iOS users are very slow to adopt new firmware updates. According to Localytics numbers, only a third of iPhone 3GS owners updated their device in the 24 hours following the release of iOS 4. It then took two more weeks for the next 40% to install it, and even as just 2 weeks ago, 20% of iPhone 3GS owners are still running older firmware. To some this is for no apparent reason, as the 3GS performs just fine on iOS 4. So why do we care about the laggards? As a project manager I think of all the developers who spend countless hours to make sure their apps are backwards compatible despite their hardwork have to avoid the storm of negative reviews in iTunes from users who are utilizing their iPhone independently of a computer like they did with their previous phones and aren't syncing or installing updates.

Perhaps over-the-air updates are the answer? It would result in improved customer satisfaction, imporved reviews for hardworking developers and improved efficiencies for all the project managers out there tracking apps!

Imagine a world where you wake up and decide, "This room needs a table...I'm going to print one up." I bet you're wondering what I'm talking about. One word. Ponoko. That's right, Ponoko.

Ponoko is a small New Zealand company of five that believes people still want to make things-not services. CEO Dave ten Have started out making waves in software and on the web--but he grew tired of it and wanted to make something he could see, something he could touch. In his New Zealand office a 3 foot printer about the size and shape of a copy machine is the secret to Ponoko's magic. The machine is a laser cutter that carves materials using a highly concentrated beam of light that is controlled by a computer. Just open it up, insert some wood or plastic...even cardboard, and in 15 minutes or more, you have the parts for a table. a lampshade, a toy.

I'm not at all suggesting that every home will have this magical printer in the future...but I am saying that ten Have is on to something. As a designer or a novice designer go to www.ponoko.com upload your design files and your table, lamp or whatever you can think of can show up at your door in less than 2 weeks. If you're more of a DIY person, download other peoples plans for free and dare to build your own. Want to sell your products or designs? Ponoko can help you do that, in the style I like to call "a la Cafe Press." Seeing is believing, check out www.Ponoko.com, before you know you can have furniture in your own home that you designed and built...and it won't be from Ikea.

-JI

Recently I went on a wine vacation with a friend. As a wine novice, I took on the role of Jack from Sideways and would say things like, "Tastes good to me!" But had my friend and I known about the recent wine apps for the iPhone we could have sounded more like wine sommeliers!

Many application developers are targeting oenophiles and by doing so have created apps for both the wine expert and the novice enthusiast.

There are several out there and choosing the right one may prove to be challenging, but thanks to a recent New York Times article the overall value of each different app has been evaluated for the consumer.

These include Cor.kz ($4), Wine Enthusiast Guide ($5), Nat Decants Food & Wine Matcher ($3) and Pair It! ($3).

Cor.kz and Nat Decants lets you type in the wine and searches for it much like a typical search engine...but typing something like "William Fevre Chablis Champs Royaux 2007" on your iPhone can be tedious. Wine Enthusiast, however, lets you find highly rated wines at your price levels, so you can quickly browse your local wine store — or, a restaurant's wine list — for matches. Nat Decants works well if you are trying to pair your wine to your meal, which has become even more popular recently, as many American's are dining at home more in the present economic times.

For those who don't have iPhones (I still love the efficiency of my blackberry's keyboard), neither Wine Enthusiast Cor.kz have an app for other devices at present, Nat Decants is available on iPhones, BlackBerrys and Android devices.

It seems like these days everyone is talking about twitter, but your "tweet" is only as good as the value it can offer your consumer or audience. In other words, like most things it's only as good as the strategy you put behind it.

Twitter is outfitted, like most social media tools, with the ability to subscribe, share, friend or follow as many twitter feeds as you like. In addition, developers are creating tools that allow users to bend and twist the feeds in creative ways. Like all social media and marketing tactics, before you can determine if something makes sense you need to analyze your objectives. So before diving in, examine how it can help you achieve your objectives:

1) Would you like a way to connect and network with others in your industry
or others who share you views?
2) Would you like a way to get instant access to what’s being said, this
minute, about your brand?
3) Would you like a steady stream of ideas, content, links, resources, and
tips focused on your area of expertise or interest?
4) Would you like to monitor what’s being said about your customers to help
them protect their brands?
5) Would you like to extend the reach of your thought leadership – blog posts
and other content?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, Twitter may be of use to you and your business. For more on 50 Ideas on using Twitter click here to go to Chris Brogan's article, "50 Ideas on Using Twitter for Business."
